Reduce your bill

10 ways to reduce your council tax bill

Every one of these is a statutory entitlement, not a loophole. Most are not applied automatically: you have to claim them. Combine the relevant tips and the savings can be substantial.

  1. 1

    Claim the single person discount

    Around £600

If you are the only adult in the property, you qualify for 25 per cent off. About 8 million households claim it. Apply through your council. Allow a few weeks for processing.

  2. 2

    Check your band is correct

    £200 to £500 a year

Around 27 per cent of band challenges succeed. Compare with similar nearby properties on the VOA tool. A successful challenge triggers a refund for every year you overpaid.

  3. 3

    Apply for Council Tax Reduction

    Up to 100% off

If you are on a low income or claim benefits, your council can reduce your bill substantially. Pension-age claimants get a more generous national scheme. Apply directly with your council.

  4. 4

Claim the disabled person band reduction

One band drop (about £200 to £400)

If your home has features needed for a disabled occupant (extra room, second bathroom, wheelchair space), your bill is calculated as if you were one band lower.

  5. 5

Claim the severe mental impairment disregard

    Often 25% to 100% off

Hundreds of thousands of qualifying claims are never made. If a household member has dementia, severe learning disability or stroke effects, get a doctor's certificate and apply.

  6. 6

    Switch to 12-month payments

    Same total, easier budget

Most councils default to 10 instalments. You have a statutory right to 12. The yearly total is identical, but each monthly amount drops by about a fifth.

  7. 7

    Set up a direct debit

£5 to £10 a year, plus avoided fees

Some councils offer a small direct-debit discount. Even where they do not, you avoid missed payments and the £70-£100 court costs that can follow.

  8. 8

    Check for other disregards

25% off if everyone disregarded but one

Apprentices on under £195 a week, full-time carers, school leavers between courses, members of religious communities and others are disregarded for council tax. If only one adult counts, you get the single person discount.

  9. 9

    Ask about the hardship fund

    One-off help

Every council runs a discretionary hardship fund separate from CTR. If you are genuinely struggling, contact your council and ask. The fund is rarely advertised.

  10. 10

Challenge an empty or second home premium error

    Up to 100% off premium

If your property has been wrongly classified as empty or as a second home, the premium can be removed and refunded. Always check the property description on your bill.

Combine tips for maximum saving

A retired pensioner living alone with mild dementia could combine the SMI disregard, single person discount, Council Tax Reduction and a successful band challenge. In the right combination, a £2,400 bill can drop close to zero. Always tell your council about every category that applies. They will not tell you.
